Staying Healthy During Your Move

Preparing to move tends to be one of the most stressful events you may encounter. You are not only changing locations, searching for a new home, new job and switching your children’s schools but you have to adjust to a new life style as well. It is important during this transition to make sure you are staying on track of a healthy diet, drinking water and exercising. Stress can easily cause bad sleeping patterns as well as high blood pressure. Be certain to take care of yourself and leave the stress up to your professional movers.
Here are a few tips on how you can maintain balance as well as an easy going move.
1)       Hire a moving company. Moving companies help ease the tension of your move. If it’s within your budget, try hiring helpers to assist you with packing your breakables or other household good items. Many companies provide full services from packing to unpacking. This will help you focus on the more important factors of your upcoming move.

2)       Keep a water bottle near you at all times. During the busy times of your move, you may forget how important it is to drink your daily doses of water. Try keeping a bottle or a fresh glass of water around you at all times to help keep you hydrated.

3)       Try to avoid eating junk food during this process. Eating heavy meals or food items high in carbs will only slow you down. Try replacing those fast breakfast meals with a yogurt and throw in some granola for extra protein. You’ll have the right amount of energy to keep your day going.

4)       Try to find some time to add in stress free activities during the moving process. Take your family to the park or your dog for a stroll around the block. While your movers are helping you pack up your home or unload your boxes, set up a nice relaxing lunch on your front lawn in order to help remain calm and to stay clear out of the way of your movers.

5)       Keep packing supplies, moving checklists and personal items close by. It’s important to make this move as worry free as possible. Knowing where your keys are or where you left the packing tape, will help keep your stress level to a minimum. Make sure there’s a clear pathway for you to get in and out of each room in order to avoid any accidents.

Moving is hectic, let’s face it. Yet with the right planning and following a few simple guidelines… it can make moving much easier for you and your entire family.

Moving With Your Pets

Moving With Your Pets
If you have your mind set to moving soon, it’s best to have a plan set up for your furry loved ones before you arrive to your new home. Just think of how difficult it is for you and the stress that comes along with moving. Your pet can easily sense your stress.
For starters, a helpful tip is to move your pet to the opposite side of your home once you begin to pack.  This way your pet isn’t trying to figure out what all of the commotion is about, nor are they in your way. Sudden changes may cause stress to your pet. If you are not moving locally, make sure to get your pet’s records from their vet, as well as order any prescriptions that may need to be filled before moving day. You may also ask your pet’s current vet if they may be able to recommend any veterinarians in the area you are relocating to. It’s always best to search around before you leave town.
It’s also important to get your pet familiar with the carrier you plan to move them in. Trying to put your pet in their carrier at the last minute may cause them to be scared or uncomfortable. Pack your pet’s belongings last in their own box and label it. This way you will have it handy once you arrive to your new place and you may get them familiar with their stuff in a new setting right away.
Once moving day arrives, put your pet in a safe place along with a bowl of food and water, maybe even a toy or two. This will help keep them out of your way. Once everything has been packed and loaded onto the moving truck, make sure to put your pet(s) in their carrier and carefully in the car with you. Be certain to stop for food and water breaks if you are traveling by car.
When arriving to your new home, place your pet in the bathroom or a room you do not plan to unload boxes in right away. Let your pet wander around your new home once everything has been unloaded. This will help them get familiar with their new surroundings.
Moving may cause a lot of stress for you and your pet. You can easily help by planning ahead. Making things easier for your pet will surely make things easier for you as well.

Tips on Moving to Florida

Many dream of living near tropical beaches, swaying palm trees and mostly warm seasons. That’s why Florida is a great place to live. Florida has all of that and so much more here in the Sunshine State. If you plan to move to Florida, it’s best to do some research before you do. Knowing Florida’s tax laws, weather patterns and transportation systems will help you get around the state easily.
Taxes
Florida does not have a state income tax. Every homeowner’s tax situation tends to vary. It’s best to find an attorney or a tax accountant upon moving to Florida, so you are aware of all the state has to offer and the benefits of having no state income tax.
Hurricanes/ Weather
The hurricane season in Florida lasts from June 1st until November 30th. There isn’t a single region within Florida that is exempt from the hurricane season. Whether you are living along the coasts, near the central areas or inland, you still may be affected by the weather. For those of you that may not have lived in a state that has a hurricane season, it’s always best to be prepared. Keep a hurricane kit in your home. This kit should include the following:
·       Water
·       Batteries
·       Canned goods
·       Flashlights
·       Candles/Matches
·       Medication
It’s always best to have an evacuation plan in order for you and your pets. Make sure you are familiar with your local animal shelters as well as places for you and your loved ones to go. You may also want to purchase flood insurance for your home, even if it isn’t required.
Travel
Florida’s main source of transportation is by car, bus or bike. There are many highways, toll roads and turnpikes to travel on. If you are traveling into major cities for work or personal reasons during rush hour traffic, it’s always best to give yourself plenty of time to arrive to your destination on time. Some local areas provide bus transportation. Not every city has the schedules and times located conveniently. Check your local bus transportation schedule and coordinate a bus stop that works best for you.
Clothing
When you think of Florida, you probably imagine warm temperatures all year round. Although you are right, a major portion of the year is warm; the winters can get a bit chilly here. If you live near the northern part of the state you’ll definitely need that winter coat and scarf to keep you warm. Even certain parts of the southern areas tend to drop in temperatures as well. The summers in Florida, due to the heat and humidity, can be unbearable at times. Make sure to wear light, breathable clothing to keep you cool. So those clothing items you didn’t think you needed to pack upon moving to Florida… you may want to pack them just in case.
Tourism
You can imagine how the roads, hotels, restaurants and tourist spots can become rather crowded during the holiday season and “snowbird” season. Florida is known around the world as one of the top travel destinations to visit; bringing in over $57 billion a year to Florida’s economy, according to the State of Florida. Be patient and remember not to tailgate those who are unfamiliar of the roads.

Moving During the Holidays

Moving During the Holidays
Oh, the holidays… time off from work or school, good food and fun times spent with family and friends, except for those who have to move during the holidays. Moving any time of the year may be stressful but needless to say, moving during the holidays can add on even more emotions.
It’s a good time of the year to move, due to already having time off from work or school, yet it’s sad to think about those holiday family traditions you may be missing out on. Try and think about it this way, it’s a perfect time to start new traditions in your new home.
One of the best parts about hiring a professional moving company is you have more time, between sorting through your belongings and packing, to visit with loved ones. If your delivery isn’t expected to arrive to your new home the same time as you and your family, it may be a good idea to spend more time with the ones you’ll miss the most. Plus, all of that holiday eating may help you burn off some energy when it comes time to unpacking.
Once you arrive to your new home and finally get unpacked and settled, try new traditions by inviting over new neighbors or having a house warming party. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors and feel comfortable to your new surroundings.
Although taking your time to move or unpack may be a great plan for some, this isn’t an option for everyone. If you need to get to your destination quickly, many professional movers, such as Sorensen Allied, provide you with a guaranteed delivery date.  This service will help provide you with an exact move date. This may also help you with that additional stress involved with your upcoming move, especially during the holidays.

Packing Your Kitchen

Packing Your Kitchen
We all can agree moving can be stressful, especially when it comes time to start packing certain rooms in your home, like the kitchen for instance. Most of us know the kitchen can be the most difficult room in the entire house to pack because it has so many breakable items as well as items you only use on occasions. That’s when you have to ask yourself- is this worth packing and moving or should I get rid of it or donate it?
Most moves are based off of weight, unless you are moving locally. So for those long distance moves, you should sort through your pantry and cupboard and try to narrow down on the weight you are trying to move. For those food items in there you know you aren’t going to eat before you leave town, ask a friend if they would like them or donate them to your local food drive. Stemware and dishes should be packed separately from bulky items that may cause them to break during the move.
On special occasions, we may take out our good China to eat with or certain table linens for the holidays. If you haven’t used these items in quite some time, it may be time to pass them along to a family member; at least they are still in the family. There’s no sense in adding weight to your move by packing and shipping items you hardly use.
As far as cleaning products go, there are of many of these items that cannot be shipped. If you have a product that has already been opened, the best suggestion is to try giving them away or dispose of them properly. Many moving companies have a list available of items you cannot ship. Be certain to check with your professional movers before deciding to add these items to a box or two.  It would probably be best to pack the unopened, transferrable items this way you have something to clean with right away when you arrive to your new home.
The last and most important box you should pack from your kitchen is the essentials box. This box includes all of the items you are going to want or need as soon as you get to your new residence. You should label this box “essentials” or “last out/ first in”- this way your movers are aware that this is an important box and should be the first one off of the truck. Most tend to pack the items that will be used within the first 24 hours upon arriving to your new home. Even if you aren’t ready to pack your essential box just yet, you can always start by making a list of the items you plan to put in it.
Now that you have prepped your kitchen, you can begin to pack.

Moving Cross Country

All of us who have moved in the past can agree moving can become not only stressful but quite expensive, especially moving cross country. For instance, relocating a three-bedroom house can go up to $10,000 in price, including the price of the move itself (considering long distance moves are based off of weight.) Here are a few tips to help you save on your upcoming cross country move.
1)        Start by figuring out your moving budget. When hiring a professional moving company, there may be a wide range of prices available depending on what services you would like to include in your upcoming move. If you are aware of how much you can spend, then you can narrow down your options and make the process a little easier.

2)        Next, try choosing the right time to move. Generally, August and September are the busiest months to move. They may also be the most expensive months to move. People tend to move during the weekends, the summer time or the holidays due to having time off from work or school. On the other hand, if you can be flexible on your moving dates you may be moving cross country cheaper. Try to consider moving through the middle of the month instead.

3)        Sorting through your belongings room by room will save you money as well. Getting rid of unwanted clutter is one of the most cost effective tips you can use to help you save money during your move, considering interstate moves go according to the amount of weight you are shipping. Try donating unwanted things or hosting a garage sale to help raise money for your move.

4)        If you’re worried about shipping your valuables, organize to take them with you personally during your move. This may help with the cost of your move simply by reducing weight.

5)        Moving cross country cheap does not necessarily mean ‘do it yourself.’ You may think asking friends, your kids or people around your neighborhood to help could save you time and money. Really, it may end up costing you more rather than hiring professionals. Sometimes using recycled boxes or asking the wrong people to help may put your belongings at risk. That’s why it benefits you to hire us.

There’s no doubt that relocating cross country can be stressful and full of emotions. That’s why it’s best to leave it to the professionals to handle all of the stress for you. Here at Sorensen Allied we guarantee you will be satisfied with your entire moving experience from beginning to the end. Our customers' satisfaction is our number one priority and we provide the same superior service whether we're relocating a family across town or a business across the world. Packing Tips

Are you getting ready for your big move and you’re not quite sure where to start? Here is a packing list with tips that you may find helpful in order to get you started.
·       First, gather all of your packing supplies before you start. (This beats having to stop in between packing to grab tape, boxes, a marker, etc.)
·       Be sure to pack the heavier items on the bottom of the box.
·       Stuff socks, scarves, pillow cases and other types of linens in holes and crevices within the boxes. (This adds protection against your goods. It also keeps them from sliding and shifting.)
·       Make sure all boxes can close properly and are able to be sealed flat. (If you over-pack a box, you risk damage to the contents.)
·       If you’re transferring liquids, check with your moving company first to see which items cannot be shipped.
·       Make sure to put liquids into a sealable container and secure by taping it down, put it into a sealed bag. Make sure to mark the box with arrows and label it "This End Up".
·       Keep an inventory list of each box and its contents. (This will be necessary if a box goes missing and you need to make a claim.)
·       Keep a box labeled "Load last, unload first" for the essentials you'll need when you arrive.
·       Keep important records with you. Do not pack them. If you cannot take them with you, then send them ahead with a secure courier company.
·       Tape screws and bolts to the back of the furniture you removed them from. Make sure you put them in a bag first.
·       Keep tools you'll need to reassemble furniture in a separate box. (There's nothing worse than arriving to your new home late at night, wanting to put the bed together and not knowing where the screwdriver is.)
·       Do not use standard garbage bags! They rip and tear too easily. If you're going to pack linens and clothing in garbage bags, purchase the thicker, heavy ones to ensure they don't burst during the move. Or double up. The great thing about garbage bags full of clothing is that they can be squished into nooks and holes that exist on the truck, protecting furniture and using less space.
·       Keep items from the same room together as much as possible. This will make it easier to sort the contents after you move.
·       Get everyone involved by making a task list, divide out the jobs that each person can do. Organizing will not only save you time and energy, but will make your whole family feel like part of this adventure.
·       Get started now! It's never too late to plan, sort and start packing.

You've Finished Unpacking

Now What to Do With Your Used Boxes
Home sweet home, all of your boxes are unpacked and everything is in it’s place.  Everything except for a large pile of empty cardboard boxes.  You can break them down and bring them to your nearest recycling distribution center, but there are a few other ways to make those boxes a tad more resourceful.
Gardening
If you have a green thumb, you’re in luck.  The cardboard from your boxes can be used in your garden to help eliminate weeds.  You can use pieces of cardboard to cover up areas where the weeds grow.  Once you cover the weeds with cardboard, you can use bark or mulch chips to hide the cardboard.  The cardboard will stop the weeds from receiving sun light and in turn they will stop growing.
Even if you aren’t a gardener, you might know someone who is.  Even better, why not donate your cardboard boxes to gardening clubs in your new community.  The members of the gardening club can share your boxes for their own gardens.
Make a Little Cash
If your boxes are in good condition and can handle another move, you might be able to make a little spare cash by advertising on craigslist or boxcycle.  This may take a little more time to get rid of the boxes but if you’re willing to wait, field phone calls and e-mails, it may be worth your time.
Donate
Of course, donating should be an easy way to get rid of your boxes.  There are always organizations within your community that can use your used boxes.  Check with local libraries, charities, churches and shelters.

No matter what you decide to do with your boxes, make sure that at the very least you recycle them with your local recycling company.  There’s no reason to waste all of that cardboard.
And of course, please don’t hesitate to visit our website in order to learn more about the services we can provide to you or your company, as we service local, out of state, corporate, and commercial moves.

Settling Into Your New Home

When planning for an upcoming move, we take the time to make a checklist in order to prepare for the move.  Normally the checklist consists of transferring utilities, filling prescriptions, locating and making a file for safe keeping for medical, financial, and other important records.  With everything that needs to be completed at the origin end, sometimes we neglect to complete a checklist for our new home.  For the smoothest move possible, make sure that you are covered at both locations.
Medical
Depending on where you are moving to, you may need to find new medical care.  Take the time to do some research in your new town to locate new medical care.  You may need to see a few different doctors, dentists, or dermatologists before finding the right one.  Depending on your health needs and your insurance policy, you may want to establish a relationship with a new doctor as soon as you arrive in your new town.
Pets
As well as our own health, we need to seek a new vet for our furry friends.  In addition, you’ll want to get them registered and their tags updated if you are in a new county.
Speaking of your animal’s health, you’ll want to keep them in shape.  Locate trails and safe areas to walk your dog.  And seek out a dog park or two.  This a twofer; your dog will make new friends and you will be able to meet new people.
Financial
Make sure that your bank is nationwide.  If not, you may consider online banking or switching banks all together.  Smaller banks may only have branches in certain states and may not offer online banking.  Make sure all of your finances are in order and that you can access your funds once you arrive in your new hometown.
Climate
Are you moving from Florida to North Dakota?  If so, you’ll need to prepare for the change in climate and you’ll need new clothing of course.  Thermal underwear, and snow wear are a definite need for a cold climate like North Dakota.  If you are moving to a colder climate in which you aren’t used to snow, make sure you are prepared for driving in the snow.  Your vehicle will need tires that are used specifically during the snowy season.
Overall, get to know your new hometown before you move.  Research the area and know what you are getting into before you make the big move.  Knowing what to expect and having a checklist for your new home will make settling in so much easier.
And of course, please don’t hesitate to visit our website in order to learn more about the services we can provide to you or your company, as we service local, out of state, corporate, and commercial moves.

Be Prepared for Issues to Ensure a Smoother Move

At Sorensen Allied Moving and Storage, it is our goal to make your moving experience as stress free and pleasant as possible.  We work hard to provide the best quality within the moving industry.
Though it’s our goal to ensure that you have the best move possible, there are a number of things that could happen during your move that we just don’t have control over.  In the event that an issue arises, we want our customers to be aware of what to expect, how to handle it, what your rights, responsibilities and options are.
Sorensen’s, as well as Allied Van Lines, work hard to assign a driver to your shipment.  In the event that a driver is unavailable to pick up your shipment on the date that you have requested, we at Sorensen Moving & Storage will pick up your shipment and hold it at our warehouse until a driver is assigned.  This isn’t an ideal situation but can happen from time to time.  We will still work hard with Allied to ensure that your delivery falls within your delivery spread.
In the event that you do not receive your household goods within your delivery spread, you may be eligible for a delay claim through Allied Van Lines.  On the first day after the last day of your delivery spread, you may be eligible for reimbursement of costs such as hotel stay, food, and certain necessities.  For more information, please contact Allied Van Lines at 1-800-444-6787 or you can visit their website at www.allied.com
Delivery spreads are based off of the weight and mileage of your shipment.  Once you and your Account Executive have agreed upon your moving contract, you are liable to be available every day during your delivery spread.  You will be contacted by your move coordinator as well as your driver at least 24 hours prior to expected delivery.  If you cannot be available during your delivery spread, your driver has the right to charge an hourly rate for waiting time or put your goods into the closest storage facility at your expense.
If you cannot be available for your delivery during your delivery spread, to avoid the extra expense, it is always good to have a representative on your behalf.  Make sure that it is someone you trust such as a relative, spouse, or close friend.
Another issue that may arise is what we call an overflow.  An overflow occurs when a driver cannot fit all of your household goods onto his truck.  At this time, Sorensen Moving & Storage will send out another truck to pick up the remainder of your items and they will be held in our warehouse until another driver is assigned to haul the remainder of your goods.
The above issues can make your move less than ideal. Unfortunately these issues take place industry wide and cannot be predicted.  By informing our customers and giving them knowledge of these issues in advance, we maintain our quality and work hard to keep each of our customers satisfied no matter what situation may arise.
And of course, please don’t hesitate to visit our website in order to learn more about the services we can provide to you or your company, as we service local, out of state, corporate, and commercial moves.

You can also reach us toll free at 1-800-926-2770 with any questions regarding our moving services.

Combining Households: Moving in With Your Significant Other

There are many moments we look forward to as well as cherish in our lifetimes.  Graduating from high school and college, moving out of our parent’s home, walking down the aisle, having children and watching our children grow, to name a few.  Somewhere in the mix of those milestones, we likely take a leap of faith and decide to move in with our significant other.
Many decades ago, you didn’t move in with another until you were married.  Today it seems to make more sense to move in with each other before fully committing.  However, just because you are not signing a marriage certificate, coupling your life and belongings with another person is a huge step and should not be taken lightly.
There are many factors to consider before moving in with your partner.  Whose home will you move into?  Will you purchase a new home together?  Will you rent an apartment or condo?  Will you have enough space to accommodate each other’s belongings?
If one of the two of you are more established in a home, it’s likely that choosing which home to move into will be a piece of cake.  However, if you are both living with parents or roommates, you may need to find a home or apartment to start fresh in.
Once you determine where to live together, the hardest part is determining how to combine your belongings.  There’s no reason to have two beds, two couches, two blenders, etc.  Before fighting over what to keep, what to toss, what to give to friends, and what to store, think about it before the actual move.
No matter which items you choose to keep in your new home, make storage a must.  Whether you decide to keep a storage shed in your backyard, rent a storage unit at a local facility or contact Sorensen Moving and Storage for your needs, you won’t regret it.
Of course, in all relationships, we hope for the very best, but don’t throw out all of your belongings in the event that you and your significant other decide to part ways at some point down the road.
And of course, whether you are moving in with your best friend, boyfriend, girlfriend or escaping any of them, please don’t hesitate to visit our website in order to learn more about the services we can provide to you or your company, as we service local, out of state, corporate, and commercial moves.
You can also reach us toll free at 1-800-926-2770 with any questions regarding our moving services.
